Aaron’s Employment Success Story

[vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_single_image media=”86992″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Aaron, a person we support in our Employment Services program, was recently honored with a Governor’s Individual Achievement Award! The award recognized Aaron’s commitment to overcoming obstacles and securing and maintaining employment in a career of his choice.

Aaron started working at a Sheetz location near his home just over a year ago, and he’s been a great addition to the team there. Aaron’s mom, Angela, says that he’s a hard worker and loves learning new things. When asked what makes him a great employee, Aaron said, “Having a good attitude. I always clean and everything, and I’m ready to train.” Aaron’s favorite parts of his job are getting to talk to customers, holding the door for senior citizens who come into the store, and knowing he’s helping his coworkers.

Sheetz employs a number of people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities through its Store Team Helper position, which was designed to provide meaningful customized employment for people with disabilities, and to place them in an important role in Sheetz’ stores. Sheetz and Pennsylvania’s Office of Vocational Rehabilitation helped Aaron become a part of the program, and Skills provided on-the-job coaching. A Skills job coach came to work with Aaron for his first couple of weeks on the job.  His coach helped him to learn about and adapt to his new job. Aaron quickly learned how to do his job independently. He now receives natural supports from his co-workers at Sheetz as needed, and Skills Employment Training Professionals support him if any issues come up, and check in periodically to make sure everything’s working well.

Angela says that her family was really surprised to find out that Aaron had been chosen to receive the Governor’s Award. “I didn’t know that was something that could happen. We were pretty overwhelmed. It’s a real bonus to getting the job. It was a really good boost to his confidence.”

“We were all so proud when we found out Aaron was getting the award,” Skills’ Regional Director of Employment Services Jen Riggle said. “He’s such a great person and it’s awesome that he was recognized.”

Aaron was also super excited about the award: “It makes me proud. That’s it’s one thing I overcame.”

When he accepted his award in Harrisburg in May, Aaron confidently gave an acceptance speech in front of over 800 people, and he received a big standing ovation from the crowd.

Skills, along with Altoona District Office of OVR and Sheetz, are so proud of Aaron for all the hard work he does every day and for the obstacles he’s overcome.
