Lori Northrup (pictured above with Dave, a person we support), an Administrative Support Assistant (ASA) at Skills’ regional office in Blair, guest wrote this post about what she loves about her job at Skills! I am an ASA who started with Skills August 3, 2015. I work in the office, but I do have some interactions with the people we support. One of my favorite parts of my job is the smiles from them.
I really enjoy when they come to the front desk to pick up mail for other buildings. They enjoy telling you what they are doing for the day, if it’s their birthday, or something they have just accomplished, and I enjoy hearing the stories. They always have smiles. 😊
I try to get a few laps in a day walking around the building when many of the people we support in our Vocational Training Center are on their break as well. They are always talking, laughing and make sure to say hi to me. And again – Smiles. 😊
It is a wonderful feeling to know you can make a difference in someone’s life just by talking to them and treating them just like anyone else without a disability, and they are just like everyone else. The same wants, needs and feelings.
Although I work in the office for Skills, I do have 17 years of experience as a direct care worker, and I know the difference our staff who provide direct care for the individuals make in a day. It takes a very kind, caring and dedicated person to be in this field. On the other hand, it is very rewarding. Our organization and staff care about the people we support! They make sure they have a place to live, food they enjoy, outings, and jobs. Employees pitch in to help other employees, and they respect what the organization stands for.
I work with many office staff and employees. Together we make a team that gets stuff done! I have people I can call for answers or assistance, and I can offer answers and assistance to others. Staff can call or email me anytime and I will help them the best I can, answer any questions, or point them to someone who can help if I can’t. I enjoy figuring things out.
Every employee and individual in this organization plays an important role in our team! Together we make Skills of Central PA., Inc.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_button button_color=”accent” border_width=”0″ link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.skillsofcentralpa.org%2Fjobs|target:_blank”]Work at Skills![/vc_button][/vc_column][/vc_row]
