1. Use respite services to take time for yourself. Respite services, including Skills’ Respite Home, can help ensure that your loved one’s support continues while you travel, seek medical care, or simply relax and rejuvenate. Also, remember to check for the signs of Caregiver Depression, and know what your limits and boundaries are in providing care.
2. Seek support from other caregivers. Whether in your own network of friends and family or online, talking through your struggles and successes with other family caregivers can help you feel supported and know that you are not alone. Additionally, it can be helpful to seek professional help with a counselor or therapist as well.
3. Practice communication skills. Whether at the doctor, with Supports Coordinators, or other people involved in your loved one’s support plan, clear and direct communication will help make sure your loved one receives the assistance they need. If your loved one is a program participant with Skills or you are looking for help for a friend or family member, feel free to reach out to ask questions and learn more about what we can provide.
4. Organize legal and medical documents so they are easy to find when you need them. It’s important to keep your legal and medical documents for your loved one in a safe, secure place like a safe deposit box. Always keep your most important documents separate from random paper, like receipts and flyers.
5. Learn more about Lifesharing and the possibility of receiving a stipend for family caregiving. In Pennsylvania, some family caregivers qualify for state funding to provide care to family members.
