How Can a Certified Peer Specialist Help You?

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image media=”86589″ media_width_percent=”100″][vc_column_text]Peer Support. The name speaks for itself. Having someone who supports and understands what you are going through- because they have been there. With many of our mental health programs at Skills, peer support is paramount.

By definition, a Certified Peer Specialist is a person with lived experience in mental health, that supports people in their recovery, by sharing their experience. Our Certified Peer Specialist’s partner with people in a wide variety of ways, including:

  • Creating a Wellness Recovery Action Plan
  • Helping create Psychiatric Advance Directives
  • Listening, relating, and providing hope regarding mental health recovery
  • Assisting with locating employment
  • Accompanying to appointments and meetings
  • Helping to locate community supports for social and personal interests

One of our favorite quotes by Ken Poirot states, “There is no greater power and support you can give someone than to look them in the eye, and with sincerity/conviction say, ‘I believe in you.

Peer Support works for many reasons and the training is essential. It provides everyday people with the professional basis to provide support in a manner that has been proven to work. But at its very core, peer support works because we look the people we support in the eye letting them know that we do, indeed, believe in them.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
