Companion Services

Feeding the duck at the park Companion services allow individuals the independence to participate safely in community and home activities.

In 2009, the Office of Developmental Programs (ODP) identified the need for a service to provide supervision and minimal assistance for people living with their family or on their own focused solely on the health and safety of the individual. Skills Companion Services started July 1, 2009 to meet this need.

Companion services can be used to provide supervision for people during nonhabilitative social, home or recreational activities, such as Special Olympics, community bowling leagues, or attending local events such as fairs, festivals or the circus. In-home services provide supervision and minimal assistance with daily activities such as household care, meal preparation and health care.

Unlike Home and Community Habilitation services, where the focus in on a habilitative outcome (i.e., learning, enhancing or maintaining a skill), Companion Services allows the person to have independence to participate in community and home activities and remain safe.

Referrals for Companion Services are made by the individual’s Supports Coordinator.

Skills currently provides Companion Services in Blair, Clearfield and Jefferson Counties.
