Community Homes
Opening the door to quality housing for people with disabilities begins with Skills of Central Pennsylvania
Individuals with developmental disabilities may choose to live in Skills modern, attractive homes designed and built for accessibility. Along with an on-site team of dedicated direct support professionals 24 hours a day, these private residential settings feature fully equipped kitchens, beautifully furnished living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, and sparkling baths. Residents enjoy the privacy of their own rooms decorated in the colors and styles they choose.
“We have our ups and downs, and each day can be challenging. It’s a great feeling to know you touched someone’s life. When you come to work and the people you serve say “I love you” or “I missed you” and you love them for whom they are — great people. We teach each other and learn from each other every day. We are a family.”
— Janet Frank
Residential Services Assistant
Skills encourages individuals to be as independent as possible and assists where needed depending on the individual’s needs and wants. Skills can help individuals learn how to use public transportation. If public transportation is unavailable, Skills provides transportation to day programs, volunteer work, jobs, leisure activities, and other events.
The people Skills serves in community homes can cook or help with meal preparation and shopping, do their own laundry, and keep their rooms the way they want them. If an individual is unable to do these things, Skills staff is available to ensure these tasks are done.
Homes are also available for retirement or for those who are medically fragile. Skills community homes include the benefit of around-the-clock care and support to meet complex medical needs, if necessary.
Residential services staff also help residents participate more fully in all aspects of community living to obtain the highest level of independence.
Referrals
Referrals for Skills Community Homes are handled through the Department of Public Welfare.
