Discovery Garden Events
Like the cycle of the seasons, annual events at Discovery Garden include a free Gardening Workshop for Discovery Garden volunteers by Blair County Extension Director Tom Ford in April, a Plant Sale fundraiser in May, and a Community Planting Day in late May held in conjunction with local schools.
Keys to Successful Gardening: Tom Ford Workshop Series
Tom Ford, Blair County Extension Director, offers gardening classes for Discovery Garden volunteers.
Each April, gardening enthusiasts are invited to attend a series of classes taught by Blair County Extension Director, Tom Ford. This workshop, sponsored by the Borough of Hollidaysburg and The Skills Foundation, is free and open to the public.
In return, participants are asked to volunteer 18 hours at Discovery Garden throughout the growing season from May through October. Participants receive a certificate of completion. Registration information and deadlines for this course typically occur each March.
Discovery Garden Plant Sale
Skills Horticultural Therapy Program and Discovery Garden benefit from this annual Plant Sale.In mid-May, Discovery Garden holds its annual Plant Sale rain or shine, usually on a Saturday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Legion Memorial Park in Hollidaysburg.
Sale items typically include annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, and garden craft items by Skills Horticultural Therapy Program, such as hypertufa stepping stones, to handcrafted birdhouses by local artisans.
All proceeds from this annual event benefit Skills Horticultural Therapy Program and Discovery Garden.
Community Planting Days
Local elementary school children plant annuals during Discovery Garden’s Planting Days.Participating Blair County Elementary school students who spending a day at the Discovery Garden with their school get a tour of the garden to learn about different kinds of plants. Each child who visits gets to plant a flower in the garden themselves as part of this activity.
Many children revisit the garden later in the summer to see how beautifully their plant grew.
The Discovery Garden is a multigenerational community project.
